Ross calls for income tax exemption for veterans

Posted: Updated:

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Mike Ross is proposing exempting military veterans' retirement pay from the state income tax, but says he wants to first study the best way to enact the eventual $16 million tax cut.

Ross proposed the exemption Monday as part of a series of measures aimed at helping the state's military veterans. Ross is running against Republican nominee and fellow ex-congressman Asa Hutchinson.

Ross said that if elected he'll call for an economic impact study to determine the best way begin exempting military pay from the state income tax. He said he believed the cut could be paid for with savings from a proposal to use veterans' treatment courts as alternative sentencing for veterans convicted of certain non-violent crimes.
