LITTLE ROCK (KATV) -

The Little Rock Zoo proudly announced Thursday the hatching of its newest resident: an African penguin chick.

The chick, born to parents Skipper and Eze, was born July 28 and is doing well. It weighed only 62 grams when it hatched, but is now up to 700 grams - or 1.5 pounds.

The chick - yet to be named - joins siblings Gilligan and Bugsy. But unlike its siblings, this newest chick is being hand-raised by keepers, because its parents abandoned the egg after it was laid.

Keeper staff successfully incubated the egg and they are now hand feeding it a formula of fish krill.

The chick's gender will be determined by a blood test. It will not be on exhibit until it is old enough to swim on its own.
