LITTLE ROCK (KATV) - A new study by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) finds more than 40 people die each day from prescription drug overdose.

The report listed Arkansas among the 10 highest states in prescribing prescription painkillers.

Dr. Michael Fahr is the medical director of the emergency department of Conway Regional Medical Center. Fahr said although he deals with prescription drug use frequently sometimes it is difficult to verify the patients prescription drug history.

"It's a big problem for us because a lot of people because a lot of people want refills on their medicines or they are not always honest with us," Fahr said, "They won't tell us they are on chronic pain medicines."

Fahr said officials are working on guidelines to better perscribe chronic pain as well as using a database that allows doctors to be able to see more in depth information about the patients prescription history.
