IRS says "Cut the Line" on scammers

DALLAS - The IRS says if someone's calling you on the phone, telling you that you owe money - it's a scam.

The IRS begins the notification process with a letter in the mail, and not over the phone.

The service also warns, real IRS employees have badge numbers.  Always ask for that number and verify it by calling 800-829-1040.

One more important note in the warning - scam callers can make their phone number look like it's coming from the IRS.  Don't fall for the attempt to steal your money and in some cases your identity.
