NORTH LITTLE ROCK (KATV) – Shortly before 9:30 PM on Sunday, homicide detectives were able to identify the victim in North Little Rock's latest homicide.  Authorities say the victim is Michael Cook, 28 of North Little Rock.

Officers were called to the intersection of Campbell & Whippoorwill around 1:00 AM on Sunday for calls of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers located a victim lying in the middle of the street, suffering from an apparent single gunshot wound.

“He was transported to Baptist Springhill where he later died of his injuries,” said Sgt. Brian Dedrick, public information officer for North Little Rock Police.

Dedrick said officers and investigators canvassed the neighborhood for witnesses, even ran the victim’s fingerprints through the state database, but even then NLRPD detectives still couldn’t put a name on the city’s most recent homicide victim. Officers haven't said how they were finally able to ID the victim.

“I can’t think of the last one we’ve had where we haven’t been able to identify someone,” commented Sgt. Dedrick.

But as NLR detectives waited for tips on who the victim was, precious time slipped away to find out who the suspect is.

“You know we do have to take time out because we want to find out who the victim is and we want to make sure we identify him,” said Dedrick.

Dedrick said there have been more detectives assigned to the John Doe case than a usual homicide investigation, but putting those investigators on this case takes a toll on the other unsolved murders in North Little Rock. There have been seven murders so far in 2014 – five of which remain unresolved.

“The problem we’ve had is that five of those have been in the past eight weeks,” commented Dedrick.

At this time, detectives still don't have a suspect or motive in this case.  If you do have any information you’re urged to call North Little Rock’s 24-hour anonymous tip-line at (501) 680-8439.
