Arkansas AG warns consumers about phishing scams

Posted: Updated:

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel is reminding residents to be vigilant of criminal schemes used to gather information through email - commonly referred to as phishing.

McDaniel issued a consumer alert Wednesday after online retailer eBay announced last week that personal information- including the email addresses of more than 145 million users- had been stolen from the company's databases in a cyberattack.

His office says typical phishing schemes involve unsolicited emails purporting to be from organizations such as banks, credit card companies, government entities or Internet service providers.

While the emails may have a legitimate-sounding address and a legitimate-looking template, consumers should look out for warning signs that the email is fraudulent, such as emails claiming to be from a government agency but not having a .gov domain name.
