Tornado victim family reflects on losing children

Posted: Updated:
Faulkner County (KATV) – A family who endured a great loss when the April tornados tore through Vilonia was honored Wednesday afternoon.

The Smith Family lost both of their young sons in the tornado, 9-year-old Cameron and 7-year old Tyler.

The parents of the two boys, April and Daniel were honored by having a forward operating base dedicated to them.

Team Rubicon gave the two an American flag that has been flying over the base since the deadly twister ripped through Arkansas.

The young couple was interviewed by media after the dedication and did their best to describe what it’s like losing their children.

“I’m still a mother, I’m sad, I miss them every moment”, exclaimed April as her voice shook. “I know I’ll see them again, that’s what keeps me going.”

April suffered two broken bones in one of her legs and a fractured pelvis. She’s now in a wheelchair. Daniel is up and walking around after debris hit his head causing trauma.

Daniel says the physical pain they suffered doesn’t compare to the emotional pain they have to live with.

“As a parent, your worst fear is losing a child”, says Daniel, “when that fear becomes a reality, that fear changes to them being forgotten, forgotten and gone.”

Team Rubicon’s dedication is just one way to prevent the Smith boys from being forgotten.
