Child Abuse Suspect Dead after Broken Arrow Standoff

Posted: Updated:

A child abuse suspect reportedly shot himself after a five-and-a-half hour standoff with Broken Arrow Police beginning Friday night. Police were called out to the scene by the suspect's wife after she reportedly found inappropriate images.

"Some of those possibly being child pornographic images and potentially some of those images may have been from a minor family member from the suspect," said Cpl. Leon Calhoun with the BAPD.

The standoff began around 10 p.m. Friday when BAPD officers responded to the 8600 block of Willow Springs Court in regards to a possible child abuse suspect.

Officers reportedly found the suspect, John Murray Jr., 60, inside a vehicle parked in the driveway. The suspect was allegedly holding a handgun.

BAPD reports the man was making suicidal statements and repeatedly refused officer requests to put the handgun on the floor and exit the vehicle.

At about 3:30 a.m. Saturday, police heard a gunshot and approached the vehicle to find the suspect deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
