Group plans LGBT campaign in Arkansas

Posted: Updated:

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A national organization is launching a three-year, $8.5 million campaign to promote LGBT equality and push for new legal protections in Arkansas and two other Southern states.

The Washington-based Human Rights Campaign is planning what it calls the "Project One America" in Alabama, Arkansas and Mississippi.

Each state is controlled by conservatives and has strong religious influences, and none currently offers legal protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered people.

The activist group hopes that a campaign built on fostering conversations and dialogue will help ease resistance and make it easier to change laws.

The president of Human Rights Campaign, Chad Griffin, says many objections can be overcome if gays and lesbians get to know their neighbors.
