GOP gubernatorial candidates clash in debate

Posted: Updated:

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Republican gubernatorial hopeful Asa Hutchinson is calling rival Curtis Coleman's vow to resist some deployments of the Arkansas National Guard "inflammatory rhetoric." Coleman is criticizing Hutchinson's past endorsement of Attorney General Eric Holder.

The two clashed in a debate on Saturday sponsored by the Arkansas Federation of Young Republicans. They're seeking the Republican nomination in the May 20 primary.

Hutchinson questioned Coleman's vow to resist repeated deployments of the National Guard if Congress hasn't issued a declaration of war. He noted that there was no formal war declaration in Iraq.

Coleman targeted Hutchinson for endorsing Holder's nomination as attorney general. Hutchinson called that support his biggest political mistake and said he believes Holder should resign.

Former U.S. Rep. Mike Ross and substitute teacher Lynette Bryant are seeking the Democratic nomination.
