Friends remember Little Rock mother who was murdered

Posted: Updated:

Little Rock (KATV) - A Little Rock mother has left her three kids behind after being shot in the head by her boyfriend.  Lemen Arana, 32, was shot in the head by her boyfriend Juan Montalba, 25, early Sunday morning. Little Rock police responded to a 911 call at 8485 Stanton Road on April 13th. When they arrived they found Montalba yelling in the middle of the road. He directed police to a car where Arana was suffering from a gunshot in the front seat. Montalba was arrested and charged with battery. In a formal interview, Montalba waved his Miranda Rights and told police on tape that he accidentally shot his girlfriend when he was poking her in the head with a pistol.

Montalba's charges were upgraded to first degree murder on Wednesday. He is currently in the Pulaski County Regional Detention Center where he is being held on a $2.5 million bond. For four days, Lemen was being kept on life support to facilitate the harvesting of her organs for transplant.  KATV spoke with Max Cabrera on Thursday. He told KATV that the hardest part about all of this is when he thinks about Lemen's three kids. "It's heart wrenching for them." Said Cabrera, "They're a very, very close family. They're all dying inside right now."
