Riverfest Reminds Festival Goers About Smoking Policy

Posted: Updated:

With Riverfest coming up in a month, the state's biggest three day festival has become a hot topic for Arkansans. But at last night's City Council meeting, smoking was the issue.

The Tobacco and Smoke Free Parks Policy was brought up reminding festival goers that you can't smoke in a Little Rock city park. Of the around 250,000 people expected at the three day art and music festival, most will be near the parks along the Arkansas River. An area made smoke-free in 2009.

If someone is caught smoking or using smokeless tobacco, they'll be asked to stop. If they don't they'll be asked to leave. This according to Ben Thielemier, the Communications and Marketing Manager for the City of Little Rock. Since smoking isn't illegal, there are no fines or arrests for not following the smoking free parks policy.

Executive Director for Riverfest, Deanna Korte tells KATV that the hard part will be enforcing the policy. She says in an interview on Wednesday afternoon, "it's the City of Little Rock's employee's responsibility to enforce that policy." A policy she says, that Riverfest has been adhering to since the start of the Tobacco and Smoke Free Parks Policy. She says that the Policy was put into place to make the parks along the Arkansas River more family friendly.
