LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Mike Ross says he backs a proposal to raise the minimum wage in Arkansas. Ross said in a statement provided to The Associated Press on Friday that he backs a proposal supporters hope to get on the November ballot. Supporters must submit 62,507 signatures by July 7 to qualify the measure. It would raise the state's current $6.25 per hour minimum wage to $7.50 on Jan. 1, 2015; to $8 per hour on Jan. 1, 2016, and to $8.50 per hour on Jan. 1, 2017. Arkansas is one of four states where the minimum wage is lower than the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. Ross is the second high-profile Democrat to back the measure. Democratic U.S. Sen. Mark Pryor endorsed the proposal earlier this year.
