Monticello Mayor Allen Maxwell found dead

(KATV) City of Monticello Mayor, Allen Maxwell was found dead by his wife Monday morning. The 70-year-old recently filed for a second term, he was serving the last year of his first term.

The City released the following statement: The City of Monticello deeply mourns his passing. His service to the City was unmmeasurable. Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later time. All your prayers will be appreciated for his friends and family.

Maxwell grew up in Warren, he started his political career in 1992 and he was a former State Representative.

The Mayor's secretary told Channel Seven the city council will meet on March 18 and they will discuss appointing an interim. A special election will likely happen in June. That person will be in office until December 31. The general election will be in November.

The Mayor and his wife Dana, were high school sweethearts. They were together for 50-years. They have two children and several grandkids.

The flag at Monticello City Hall has been lower to half-staff in honor of Mayor Allen Maxwell.
