Event Raises Money to Help Those With Hearing Loss

Posted: Updated:

Dr. Seuss's beloved characters were on hand Sunday evening asking people to put cash in the hat for a local organization that helps deaf and hard of hearing people.

TSHA, which stands for Total Source for Hearing-loss and Access, held their 32nd annual Souper Sunday fundraiser at the Union Multi-purpose Activity Center featuring a Dr. Seuss theme.

Local restaurants serve soup, breads and deserts at Souper Sunday. This year's event drew a large crowd.

Money is raised through admission and a silent auction of donated items from area businesses.

Casey Newman, the event chairperson, told KTUL that she expects to raise about $30-40,000 during the evening. That money will go to pay for interpreting services and other events that serve the hearing loss community.

"Many services are really needed for those people, whether it's for their lifestyle, for living arrangements, for interpreting services with the community going to appointments and TSHA provides all of those," she said. Newman told KTUL that the organization is about improving the quality of life of those with some form of hearing loss so that they can be social and function in the community.

Throughout the event hall, many people could be seen using sign language to communicate. Some were signing about the food and others were clearly sharing something funny.

Newman said one in four people suffer from some hearing loss. She told KTUL that not only does the event raise funds for a service that is vital to these people, but it also serves to raise public awareness about the topic.
