Arkansas lawmakers to resume budget discussions

Posted: Updated:

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas lawmakers are expected to discuss finalizing the state's budget bill again, after legislators couldn't agree on how much money should be spent from the state's surplus.

A legislative panel on Thursday will review measures seeking funding through the state's projected surplus, according to a joint budget committee co-chairman.

Gov. Mike Beebe and lawmakers are asking for about $83.3 million in various proposals from the state's projected surplus, which is about $126 million.

Top leaders from both chambers say there are few disagreements from lawmakers about Beebe's proposed $5 billion budget. Under the governor's budget, funding would be increased for the state's public schools and prisons.

The state's budget bill is one of the last measures considered by lawmakers before the fiscal session will adjourn.
