Update on rescued animals from puppy mill

Posted: Updated:

(KATV)-The Humane Society of Saline County is housing 183 animals that were rescued last week from an apparent puppy mill.

Since then, the animals have been receiving medical attention and better living conditions from the Humane Society of the United States and Red Rover.

"They've all received veterinary examinations and started treatment on immediate medical conditions and injuries that we found," said Jennifer Kulina-Lanese of the Humane Society of the United States.

One of the dogs was completely blind, many had hair matted so badly they could barely walk. Another was found with no lower jaw bone. Among the puppies were exotic birds, cats, chickens and turtles.

The animals can't be adopted right now because of pending litigation, but they've already received a lot help from the community.

"Right now if people want to help, they can make monetary donations to the humane society of saline county and we can purchase an X-ray machine to get these guys the radiographs they need instead of having to transport them to the vet," Kulina-Lanese said.

The humane society and organizations like Red Rover came from all over the country to rescue the animals and usually respond during mass cruelty situations. The Humane Society of Saline County had enough space, so they set up warm homes for the animals as the case makes its way through the courts.

"That's the best news. Eventually these guys will be up for adoption and they'll know what a couch is and what a bed is and what carpet is and they'll be able to live like a dog should," Kulina-Lanese said.
