Green Party legislator to run as Democrat

Posted: Updated:

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - A former Harlem Globetrotter and Arkansas' only Green Party member in the state Legislature is officially running for re-election as a Democrat for the Arkansas House.

State Rep. Fred Smith submitted paperwork Wednesday to run as a Democrat for House District 50 in eastern Arkansas.

He previously was elected to the House in 2010 as a Democrat, but when a judge found him guilty of a felony theft of property delivered by mistake charge, Smith resigned from the office.

Smith tried in 2011 to file official paperwork to run as a Democrat for the House, but that party sued to keep him off the ballot over the conviction.

A judge dismissed the theft case, and Smith won a House seat as a Green Party member.
