Southern Poverty Law Center: 24 hate groups in Arkansas

Posted: Updated:

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) – UPDATE: Channel 7 spoke with the Southern Poverty Law Center regarding their general criteria when classifying groups as "hate groups." Below is the statement we received:

"All hate groups have beliefs or practices that attack or malign an entire class of people, typically for their immutable characteristics."

In the case of anti-LGBT hate groups, our reference to "immutable characteristics" immediately gets you into an argument, still unresolved, as to whether or not homosexuality is an immutable characteristic. We are not experts in that, so we have refined the definition of hate groups in the case of anti-LGBT groups. Here's the language we use on the website in introducing a list of religious right anti-LGBT hate groups:

"Generally, the SPLC¹s listings of these groups is based on their propagation of known falsehoods ‹ claims about LGBT people that have been thoroughly discredited by scientific authorities ‹ and repeated, groundless name-calling. Viewing homosexuality as unbiblical does not qualify organizations for listing as hate groups."

And here, from our site, is what we say in the introduction to the list of antigovernment "Patriot" groups:

"Generally, Patriot groups define themselves as opposed to the 'New World Order,' engage in groundless conspiracy theorizing, or advocate or adhere to extreme antigovernment doctrines. Listing here does not imply that the groups themselves advocate or engage in violence or other criminal activities, or are racist."

Southern Poverty Law Center updated its yearly map of hate groups by state Tuesday with 24 hate groups located in Arkansas. Of those 24 hate groups, seven are listed in Harrison.
