Judge blocks death row executions

Posted: Updated:

A request granted today that blocks death row executions until new legislation is written on how executions are carried out.

Lawyers representing 9 inmates say the current method is unconstitutional. The inmates argue it gives the Department of Correction too much power.

Judge Wendell Griffin said in court the law fails to define procedures and training for correction department staff who would administer lethal injections.

"Essentially what the judge held is that the 2013 Method of Execution Act continued to have flaws that did not fully correct the 2009 act," said Jeff Rosenzweig, attorney for the inmates.

Right now there are no scheduled executions. The last one that was carried out was in 2005.
