PITTSBURGH, Feb. 1, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The United Steelworkers (USW) today said some 62 members of Local 3610-02 were locked out at PSC Metals, Inc.'s Canton, Ohio facility. The union has already filed an unfair labor practice charge against the scrap metal processing company for bargaining in bad faith with Region 8 of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).

USW lead negotiator Bob Andrews called on PSC management to end its lockout and return to the bargaining table to resolve the outstanding issues through good faith negotiations.

"We are ready and willing to fight for a fair contract at PSC," Andrews said, "but we strongly believe that these differences can and should be resolved through the collective bargaining process."

USW District 1 Director David McCall accused PSC management of breaking the law in the company's attempt to starve workers into accepting unfair, unreasonable and unnecessary economic and non-economic concessions that include completely terminating employee medical benefits and gutting protections against contracting out.

"Filing charges with the NLRB is the first step in holding PSC management accountable for its unprovoked actions against these workers," McCall said. "The USW will pursue additional charges if the company continues to ignore its duty to negotiate in good faith."

The USW represents 850,000 men and women employed in metals, mining, pulp and paper, rubber, chemicals, glass, auto supply and the energy-producing industries, along with a growing number of workers in public sector and service occupations.
