Alabama students will not be required to make up snow days

Posted: Updated:

Students will not have to make up days missed this week due to winter storm.

Each school district must request a waiver from the state department of education to have the missed days excused.

The legislature passed a law after the April 27, 2011 tornadoes that allowed for missed school days if the Governor declares a state of emergency.

Update:

There has been some confusion with this story. It was originally posted on ABC 33/40's website and it is in response to a winter storm that affected north central Alabama in late January 2014. Because of the way some content is shared between sister stations ABC 33/40 and KATV, the story appeared to have also been posted referencing a winter storm in Arkansas. This story only pertains to Alabama. We have also edited the headline as of Feb 4 to indicate that it is about students in Alabama.

We apologize for any confusion.
