Broken Arrow alum David Alexander has been named the head football coach at Broken Arrow High School. KTUL's Rick Pendergraft first broke the story this afternoon via Twitter.
Below is the press release from Broken Arrow Superintendent Dr. Jarod Mendenhall:
After a lengthy interview process, Superintendent Dr. Jarod Mendenhall has announced David Alexander as his recommendation for the next head football coach at Broken Arrow Public Schools. The hire is pending Board of Education approval at the Feb. 10, regular board meeting.
“There were nearly 50 applicants for this position including some of our current coaches, as well as multiple in-state and out-of-state candidates,” Mendenhall said. “Only 15 of those applicants received an interview with our committee, which then narrowed the applicant pool down to two finalists: Rafe Watkins and David Alexander. Both were outstanding candidates for the position, and in the end, we believe Alexander to be the better fit for our district.”
David Alexander is the current running back coach at Broken Arrow High School. Alexander came to Broken Arrow from Jenks Public Schools where he was teacher and coach, and he also spent time as the coach for the Tulsa Talons Arena Football League.
He is a graduate of the University of Tulsa and played in the National Football League for ten years, eight with the Philadelphia Eagles and two with the New York Jets. Alexander has been a member of the Executive Board for the Indian Nation Football Conference, and has been inducted into both the Broken Arrow and TU Athletic Halls of Fame.
“In addition to all that he has accomplished professionally, he is also a 1982 graduate of Broken Arrow High School,” Mendenhall said. “He is well-acquainted with this community and I believe that knowledge will help him be successful in expanding our football program.”
Alexander is expected to be officially hired at the Board of Education meeting on Feb. 10 at 6 p.m. in the Education Service Center. Both he and his family will be present at that meeting. A press conference will be held at 10 a.m. the following day on the second floor of the Multipurpose Athletic Facility.
“I am so honored to be selected for this position, and I firmly believe that everything I have experienced up to this point has prepared me to be the head football coach at Broken Arrow Public Schools,” Alexander said. “We already have a great football program, but I am eager to begin building upon that tradition, taking it to an even higher level of excellence.”
