Grass Fire Forces Inola Schools to Close After Power Outage

Posted: Updated:

A large grass fire that burned in Rogers County caused disruptions in electricity for a few towns.

Officials with the Inola Fire Department told KTUL that the fire began late Sunday evening in a rural area near Inola. Multiple crews assisted the Inola Fire Department including the Oak Grove Fire Department and the Choteau Fire Department.

Inola Public Schools Superintendent Llyod Holbrook told KTUL that schools were closed Monday due to the fear that power would not be completely restored.

At this time it is believed that the cold front and strong winds that came through Oklahoma knocked down a main transmission line. It shorted and caught the grass on fire that burned for two and a half miles.

Officials told KTUL that no structures or people were in danger during the fire. But a large amount of farming land was lost.

Public Service of Oklahoma crews have restored power Monday afternoon. It is believed at least 1,000 customers were without power early this morning in Inola and surrounding communities.
