UPDATE: Student charged with attempted murder identified

Posted: Updated:

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) - The student wanted in connection to attempted capital murder and robbery of a 22 year-old at Sharks on Fair Park has been identified as 16-year-old Demontae Berry.

Berry turned himself in to police Wednesday morning, and is expected to be charged as an adult.

Tuesday, Little Rock Police said the suspect escaped from a school resource officer at Hall High which led to a manhunt that locked down two schools.

Police said the 16-year-old student was being held in the school resource office when he maneuvered out of his handcuffs and jumped down a flight of stairs. Berry ran off. Officers chased him but lost sight of him as he ran into the surrounding neighborhood.

Forest Heights Middle School and Hall High School went on voluntary lockdown and the school district followed protocol.  All students were safely dismissed without incident, according to police.

Police said he had his attorney present when he surrendered Wednesday morning.

They are also investigating how Berry got out of the handcuffs.

"They're trying to figure out exactly how he was cuffed, you know, what other methods could have been used to make sure he... would have remained in custody," explained Lt. Sidney Allen with LRPD.

He is now facing attempted capital murder, theft, aggravated battery, and escape charges.

Lt. Allen would only say the incident happened in 2013 and that the suspect and victim knew each other to some degree but were not related.
