Sully Says: Cabot's Launius Wins Landers Award

Posted: Updated:

Zach Launius was surprised. Why? Well, the most productive back in the state during the 2013 high school season didn't fit the Landers Award Winner profile.

The Landers Award usually goes to one of the state's top college prospects. Zach Launius is not a hot college prospect. There's a chance that he won't get a college football scholarship offer.

Zach Launius does fit the profile we set up for this award 14 years ago. The goal was to reward the best player in the state - not the best college prospect. Zach put up Landers Award winning numbers in Cabot's biggest games.

Look at this playoff run: Launius rushed for 205 yards and five touchdowns as Cabot beat Little Rock Central, 35-7; the 5 foot 7 inch senior rushed for 241 yards and five touchdowns against North Little Rock in the state semifinals and it was his two point conversion run that gave Cabot a 43-42 win.

His 7A championship game numbers: 39 carries for 179 yards and three touchdowns. He also threw a touchdown pass in the game.

The goal for the Landers Award to make it a night to remember for all 14 players we honor. I hope we accomplished that this year.

Congrats again to Zach, our Paul Eells award winner Bo Weddle of Carlisle and the other 12 finalists.

Landers Award night is still one of my favorite nights of the year.
