Stadium tests cause green sky in Fayetteville

Posted: Updated:

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) - A glowing green sky in Fayetteville on Thursday night wasn't a glimpse of the northern lights - it was just the Razorbacks.

The University of Arkansas says officials tested the lights and scoreboard at Razorback Stadium, which sent a green glow into the sky. Athletic department spokesman Kevin Trainor tells Fayetteville television station KHOG (http://bit.ly/1cJLCC9 ) that the university was conducting routine tests on the scoreboard without turning on the full stadium lights. Trainor says that caused the green glow that was visible from parts of Fayetteville.

A strong solar flare from the sun shook up the Earth's magnetic field, expanding the Aurora Borealis south. The University of Alaska's Geophysical Institute predicted the northern lights would be visible in Canada and the northern parts of the United States on Thursday night.
