State Police: 3 weather-related traffic deaths Wednesday

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) - Three people were killed in weather-related traffic accidents Wednesday, according to Arkansas State Police.

First, the car 58-year-old James A. Nichols of Flippin was a passenger in hit an icy bridge southbound on Highway 46 in Grant County just after noon. The driver lost control, hit the bridge's guardrails several times then hit a second vehicle in the northbound lane.

A third car driving behind Nichols was not able to stop and hit them both.

Nichols died. Four others were injured and taken to the hospital for treatment.

Several hours later, Thomas Coats of Hattieville was killed when he lost control of the car he was driving on icy roads while driving southbound on Highway 124 in Conway County around 4:40 p.m.

He went off the road and hit a group of pine trees around. No other cars were involved.

Around half-an-hour after that, 83-year-old James Franklin of Bradford was traveling along Highway 167 North in White County when he lost control on an icy patch. Franklin veered into the southbound lane and hit another vehicle.

Franklin was killed and two people in the other car were injured. They were taken to White County Medical Center for treatment.
