Plenty of unknowns in potential impeachment process

Posted: Updated:

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - One of his fellow Republicans says Arkansas Lt. Gov. Mark Darr's impeachment is "inevitable" unless he resigns over an ethics scandal.

If legislators are going to try to impeach Darr, though, they're going to first have to write the rules for the process, which hasn't been used in Arkansas in more than 140 years.

House Speaker Davy Carter said Wednesday that he soon hopes to appoint a bipartisan committee to examine the options for impeaching Darr, who refuses to resign.

While state law and the state constitution are clear on the framework for the impeachment process, many of the details haven't been written.

The last time an impeachment was attempted in Arkansas was in 1871, three years before the state's current constitution was adopted.
