UA-Fort Smith campus plan could cost $200 million

FORT SMITH (AP) - The chancellor at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith says the cost of implementing a campus master plan during the next 20 years could reach $200 million.

The Times Record reported Friday that Chancellor Paul Beran told the Fort Smith Regional Chamber of Commerce that UAFS' student enrollment is expected to reach 9,000 by 2033. UAFS currently has the equivalent of about 7,000 students.

The plan revealed in October calls for several new buildings and street changes, including eventually making UAFS a pedestrian campus. It also calls for expanding the dining hall, additional student housing, the segregation of academics by course, an auxiliary gymnasium and training center at the Stubblefield Center and new softball and soccer complexes.

Beran called the projects "evolutionary" and said they will depend upon raising money.
