Thieves steal package with valuable items, victim blames post office

HOT SPRINGS (KATV) - Thieves stole a Garland County woman's valuable family heirlooms and other personal effects, after the post office dropped off a package on her front porch.

For Jean Gordon this Christmas will be one she'll never forget for all the wrong reasons. That's because on the day we're supposed to receive our favorite gifts, she lost invaluable items that can never replaced.

"They assured us that the post office would never just leave a package on the doorstep," she said.

It was a promise that a United States Postal Service employee couldn't keep and it cost Gordon dearly.

"We had our belongings from our safe deposit box shipped from Bend, OR, here to Hot Springs," said Gordon.

It was the last piece of property and perhaps most important to be mailed across the country to Gordon's new home.

"It was confirmed that it was delivered and dropped off at our front porch which was exactly what we did not what to happen," she said.

A box filled with Gordon's family heirlooms, like her grandmother's favorite jewelry, her grandfather's World War I medal, her great-grandfather's pocket watch and pictures of Gordon's son who passed away in 2006. All of it, including important personal documents were stolen from her porch early last week.

"It wasn't so much about the dollar value but the sentimental aspect of it and your family, your family heirlooms just being gone," she said.

Channel 7 reached out to a USPS and a representative said that it is common practice to leave packages on doorsteps if no signature is required. So now all Gordon can hope for is a late Christmas miracle.

"I would hope that they would do the right thing and return it," she said.

Gordon did have $200 of insurance on her package so that's the most she'll be compensated for. She says it does nothing to replace what she's lost.
