New Year's Day Fire Kills Two Sisters

Posted: Updated:

Only hours into the New Year, a fire ripped through a Pine Bluff home shared by four sisters and ripped a family apart. Jackie Gibson lived with her three sisters, 53-year-old Lynn O'Neal, 56-year-old Allison O'Neal and 51-year-old Daisy Gibson Roberts. She wasn't home when the fire started.

"Daisy had just been accepted to college to be an evangelist. Allison was a retired school teacher, a wonderful person," recalled Gibson. The sisters were active in their church and beloved in the neighborhood. Sam Purley lived a few houses down the road.

"I always would go over there in and out over there at their house, and (Daisy) always cooked and did everything for everybody," said Purley.

It was in the kitchen that firefighters believe the blaze began. Pastor Eddie Harris spoke to Lynn at the hospital.

"When I was in to see her earlier this morning she said, 'Pastor, I was cooking dinner. New Year's dinner. I put some food on the stove and laid down and dozed off asleep and the next thing I knew,' she said, 'I couldn't get them out by myself. The house was ablaze'."

Firefighters managed to save Lynn but not her sisters.

"It's not going to be easy for quite a while. It really isn't," said Pastor Harris.

"I believe our family needs each other now more than ever before, and I believe we'll see each other through this," said Gibson.

Lynn is in intensive care but is expected to recover. One firefighter was also taken to the hospital where he was treated for exhaustion and released.
