Anti-pollution program tested at SW Mo. lake

Posted: Updated:

KIMBERLING CITY, Mo. (AP) - A new campaign to keep Missouri's lakes clean of trash and pollution is getting its first test at Table Rock Lake along the Arkansas border.

The Springfield News-Leader reports the Missouri Clean Marina program is a joint effort by the nonprofit Missouri Stream Team Watershed Coalition and Ozarks Water Watch.

The program enlists lakeside marinas to take steps to keep oil, gasoline and runoff pollution from flowing into the water. Ozarks Water Watch project manager Ronna Haxby says marinas that pass inspection can then advertise their stewardship of the lake by flying special flags.

Haxby says 10 marinas on sprawling Table Rock Lake have already expressed interest, with more expected to sign up.

Organizers hope the pilot program will lead to other Missouri lakes joining the Clean Marina campaign.
