Vacant school burns down in northeast Arkansas

Posted: Updated:

PARAGOULD (AP) - Authorities suspect lightning is to blame for a fire that destroyed a vacant school building in rural Greene County.

The former Stanford High School building burned to the ground over the weekend. Western Greene County Volunteer Fire Department Chief James Potter says the cause of the fire hasn't been determined, but no investigation will be conducted because the building wasn't insured.

Potter says lightning most likely sparked the blaze early Saturday that destroyed the school.

The Paragould Daily Press reports that the school has been vacant since the 1990s when Stanford was consolidated with the Paragould School District.
