Several stores offer extended hours for last minute Christmas shoppers

Posted: Updated:

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) - With Christmas on the doorstep and many yet to finish their holiday shopping, several retailers on banking on those down to the wire customers with extended Christmas hours.

‘Tis the season for procrastination, although many won't fess up to waiting until the last minute at face value.

"They kind of just pop into your mind as Christmas gets closer," said Heather Tomlinson, buying last minute gifts at Old Navy on Monday.

Retailers like Old Navy and Kohls are cashing in on shoppers like Tomlinson, pushing deals and steals for shoppers.

"A lot of winter merchandize is a seasonal liability," said Kimberly Jackson, store manager at Old Navy.  "We want to try to get it out of the stores as quickly as we can."

Best Buy is open until midnight on Monday and Toys ‘R Us will remain open 24 hours until close on Christmas Eve.

"It's definitely more convenient," commented Denicha Kemp, blaming her last minute shopping on a busy work schedule.  "I can come anytime I get a chance to, during the day or at night."

Jason White, owner of The Scalded Dog hot dog stand, is also collecting on the convenience factor.  He set up shop right outside Old Navy, working the shoppers who are running all over the place and are getting hungry.

"Look at the foot traffic," said White.  "Great visibility, perfect time of year right?"

For many Arkansas retailers like Old Navy, this month's ice storm took a hit on holiday sales.  Jackson is hoping the store's extended holiday hours will help boost the bottom line.

"Christmas is one of those holidays where they just have to shop, no matter what," said Jackson.  "So we should be able to gain that money back."

But for countless people, last minute Christmas shopping much like Black Friday shopping, is a rush.  It's something they look forward to – but not Lauren Mahone.

"I don't like the crowds, it's traffic, no I don't really like it but I have to do it," said Mahone.
