WEAVER, Ala. -

Calhoun County investigators say 20-year-old Elizabeth Lauren Hartnett died Thursday morning from a gunshot wound to her chest.

Witnesses told police 2 men were present at the time of the shooting.

Later Thursday, investigators found Hartnett's boyfriend, John Denver Pegg, in Clay County.  Chief Bush said Pegg initially ran from law enforcement officers, but Clay County deputies and members of the Clay County Drug Task Force caught him.

James Logan Shaw was the other man at the homicide scene and remained when officers arrived.  Police detained him for questioning, but he has not been charged in the case.

Friday, Weaver police charged Pegg with murder. He has a $100,000 cash bond.

Weaver police responded around 9 a.m. to an emergency call at Shannon Hills Apartments, at the intersection of Old Jackson Highway and McClellan Boulevard.

Officers found Hartnett lying on the ground outside one of the apartment units. Chief Bush said it appears the shooting happened inside the building.

Paramedics took Hartnett to Regional Medical Center in Anniston, but could not save her life.

Pegg is in custody in Clay County on unrelated arrest warrants. Once Pegg is released from jail on the Clay County charges, he will be transferred to Calhoun County Jail.
