The worst part of the local Television business is watching people you work with on a daily basis for 3, 4 or 5 years leave for another job. I remember spending part of Thanksgiving 2012 on a recliner, in my new man cave, watching NFL football with two of my KATV buddies, Roger Susanin and Matt Johnson.
I can't see that happening again anytime soon. Roger now works in Nashville, Matt in San Diego.
The turnover in College Coaching is worse than local TV.
Just look at what's happened in the state over the past 14 years.
Houston Nutt, Bobby Petrino , John L. Smith and Bret Bielema have coached the Hogs. ASU 's coaching roll call since 2000 includes Joe Hollis, Steve Roberts, Hugh Freeze, Gus Malzahn and Bryan Harsin. UAPB's football leaders since 2000, Lee Hardman, Mo Forte and Monte Coleman.
UCA had just one coach during that time.
Clint Conque won a school record 105 games in his 14 year run in Conway. Under Conque , UCA became an elite Division two program, and then a top FCS Division one program.
I started calling UCA games in 2007. I remember the first play from scrimmage that season. UCA quarterback, Nathan Brown, hit his fullback about 30 yards downfield. I think I jumped out of my chair. I can't tell you how many of those moments that I've experienced over the past 8 seasons.
Clint Conque's offenses have and will always go through the quarterback, and Coach can develop quarterbacks. In our time calling UCA's games, Justin Acri and I , have had the pleasure of watching three first team all-conference quarterbacks sling it all over the field.
Big plays and big wins made for many fun Saturdays.
When I heard the news that Coach Conque was leaving UCA for the same position at Stephen F. Austin, I thought about Coach Conque's final game at UCA.
It was vintage Clint Conque football.
UCA battered highly ranked conference rival Sam Houston St. At halftime, UCA led the Bearcats 42-10. Junior quarterback Ryan Howard threw four touchdown passes in the first 30 minutes. Those covered 29 yards to junior Dezmin Lewis twice, 71 yards to junior Damien Watts and 24 yards to redshirt freshman Desmond Smith. The Bears settled for a 49-31 win over the 9th ranked Bearcats.
With about 4 minutes to go in that game, and up by 18 points, UCA did something that surprised me. Ryan Howard raised up and went big ball, a 50 yard pass to Damien Watts. Looking back , it may have been Coach Conque just wanting to fire one last salvo.
I have mementos from my time calling Conque's Bears including a conference championship ring, and a couple of championship footballs, but it's the memories of those fun Saturdays calling Clint Conque's Bears that I will treasure most.
