Police say phone scam targeting debit card information

Posted: Updated:

Police in Paragould are warning residents to watch out for calls that claim their debit card is "locked".

Cpl. Jack Hailey with the Paragould Police Department said the calls involve an automated message that tells the customer their MasterCard has been locked. It goes on to say they should press one and enter their debit card number to unlock the account.

"I guess the different thing about is that it was automated," Hailey said, "so it had a lot of validity to the call because it wasn't someone on the other end of the line talking."

More than 100 Focus Bank customers in Paragould and Missouri were targeted.

If you happen to get a call like that, police say just hang up.
