Local Retailers Hit With Less Shopping Days Because of Winter Storm

(KATV) Some stores saw products disappearing from the shelves because of the winter storm. Groceries and bread were flying off the shelves as were products for keeping the snow at bay such as shovels and salt. But other retailers, who were depending on a weekend full of Christmas shoppers, weren't so lucky.

Cobblestone and Vine was closed Friday because of the ice. They opened Saturday, but saw very few customers.

"It's called no sales when you're closed and just very minimal on the other days," said Kim Gillum, owner of Cobblestone and Vine.

At Bella Boutique, 75 percent of their business comes from Christmas shopping. A paralyzing storm can hurt business.

"It worries me a lot since our selling season is so short this year for us, it if happened in January, it might not be the end of the world, but it's definitely not what you want to happen this time of year," said Narcissa Jackson, owner of Bella Boutique.

ShopperTrak, which tracks retail sales and foot traffic in stores around the country, says there are fewer weekends this year than in 2012 to shop for presents. There were only in four weekends in total from black Friday through Christmas Eve. Only two weekends remain.

ShopperTrak also reports there were 32 shopping days in 2012, compared to only 26 this year, between black Friday and Christmas Eve.

A even bigger blow to retailers who depend on black Friday sales, foot traffic decreased in the south by 2.3 percent on "black weekend."

With only 2 weekends left, local retailers are hoping for a flood of shoppers to make up for lost days.

"I just hope it's out of control busy," said Jackson.

The founder of ShopperTrak told Channel 7 News there's a good chance the busy shopping time will happen.

"Shortly after the recovery, in other words, they get the snow cleared in this instance, is when we see almost like a pent up demand," said Bill Martin, founder of ShopperTrak.
