Highway officials urge Ark. motorists to stay home

Posted: Updated:

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Weather forecasters and highway officials have the same message for Arkansas motorists - stay home if at all possible.

Wintery weather that began on Thursday was forecast to bring an ice storm to much of the state on Friday, making highways treacherous.

Arkansas highway department spokesman Randy Ort says he expects the most frequent problems to occur on bridges and overpasses, which freeze more easily than surface roads.

The National Weather Service says conditions can deteriorate as the storm progresses and that up to three-quarters of an inch of ice is expected in places. However most places affected are expected to have a quarter-inch.
