Warming shelters desperate for donations as many look for a place to stay

Posted: Updated:

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) - As temperatures begin to drop, warming shelters around Little Rock are starting to fill up. The Salvation Army in Little Rock is filling up quickly and its shelves emptying even faster.

"I have two kids and it's very cold outside," said Cidria Hooks, a mother of two staying at the Salvation Army's warming shelter with her husband.

For many of us frigid temperatures may mean a night cuddled at home near the fire place.

"It's just getting bad right now, so it's a blessing from God that we have a place to stay," she said.

It's a luxury Hooks and her family don't have and Thursday's low temperatures serve as a chilling reminder of that.

"We had one night where it was cold last year and we didn't have the heat and that was so cold," said Leila Lipham.

For Lipham that cold night is enough of a reminder to help those in need.

"I am here to get rid of stuff that I don't need and to help people," she said.

She dropped off two pillows, blankets, gloves and hats.

"If I have extra, that's the least I can do," said Lipham.

The Salvation Army is asking you to do the same and give blankets, snacks, coffee and especially monetary donations.

"the Salvation Army will be here for them. So, we are asking the community to be here for us," said Captain Roger Glick. "It could get tough for us."

And if keeping a family like this one warm and well fed tonight isn't reason enough, here's another.

"If you can imagine that one moment in our life where you haven't had something, that's why," said Lipham.

There are two other organizations that are in desperate need of blankets and monetary donations---the Union Rescue Mission and the Watershed.

You can donate to:

Union Rescue Mission by visiting them at 3000 Confederate Blvd., Little Rock, AR 72206.

The Watershed: 2921 Confederate Blvd., Little Rock, AR 72206

The Salvation Army: 1111 West Markham St., Little Rock, AR 72201 or you can donate online Here
