Overall crime increases in LR, one area driving rise

Posted: Updated:

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) - A report released by the Little Rock Police Department revealed a jump in the city's crime rate. But authorities say one particular part of the city is driving the increase.

Southwest Little Rock has seen a nearly twenty percent increase in several areas including robberies. Ken Richardson, a city board member, said if the city doesn't do more than just arrest criminals those numbers will only get worse.

"We have to figure out a way to address it in a holistic way, rather than just these band aid approaches in terms of targeting one area and then you move it to another area." said Richardson.

Richardson said this is one of the major reasons why crime rates have increased in places like southwest Little Rock. Recent numbers show an 18 percent jump in individual robberies and a 20 percent increase in auto thefts this year compared to last. Residential burglaries dropped.

"Most of them are financial in nature and that speaks to the point that a lot of us have been saying in the community for a long time. That we got to figure out a way to address the employment needs of those that are unemployed or under employed." he said.

Richardson accused the city of simply increasing their man power in certain neighborhoods and effectively shifting the crime elsewhere. That elsewhere right now is southwest Little Rock, a problem for Capt. Terry Hastings to deal with now.

"We move our man power around as those things rise and fall. So that's just an issue mine may be up now," he said. "But next year it may be up at a different part of the city."

Overcrowded jails are also forcing authorities to release a lot of these criminals if they have not committed a violent crime.

Overall, the city saw a four percent increase in the first six months of 2013 compared to the same six months of 2012.
