Two Arkansas based companies take different sides on Thanksgiving shopping

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) - Many know where they'll be the day after Thanksgiving – out shopping deals for Black Friday.  But many big box stores say their customers want to shop even earlier and now will be opening Thanksgiving night.

Stores like Kmart, Sears, Target, Old Navy, Staples, Toys "R" Us, Michaels, JC Penney, Kohls, Dollar General, Dick's Sporting Goods and Best Buy will be opening their doors to bargain shoppers right after their customers finish their Thanksgiving meals.

Bentonville-based Walmart also assumes you're ready to shop on Thanksgiving.  This year for the first time they will open at 6:00 PM Thanksgiving Day.

"We have a $98 32-inch LED TV which we expect will be a big seller," said Tara Raddohl, spokesperson for Walmart.

But there are plenty of stores that are planning Black Friday sales, but say they will be open only on Friday.  Those stores include Home Depot, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Burlington Coat Factory, Apple, Radio Shack and Ross.  That group also includes Little Rock-based Dillard's.

Julie Johnson Bull, spokesperson for Dillard's, said they have a long standing tradition of "honoring our customers' and associates' time with family."

"In the coming weeks out associates will work long hours to deliver exceptional customer service at Dillard's and we want them to know how much we appreciate that.  We think it's the right thing to do," said Bull in a statement.

But Walmart says they're rewarding their employees with time and a half pay for Thanksgiving this year plus other compensation.

"Associates that work on Thanksgiving Day will receive a hot Thanksgiving meal as well as a 25% discount on a shopping trip of their choice through the Christmas season," said Raddohl.

Walmart says the real reason they are opening on Thanksgiving Day is because the demand for the product is there.

"This is about our customers at a time when they have asked us to be available to them and serve them," said Raddohl.
