Mayflower business owner sues ExxonMobil for hundreds of thousands in losses

Posted: Updated:

MAYFLOWER (KATV) - A Mayflower business owner is the latest to file a lawsuit against ExxonMobil for hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost sales.

He told Channel 7 how oil spill cleanup efforts wiped out potential revenue during his busiest time of the year.

Danny Brown had invested thousands gearing up for the peak of the season in the RV industry but on March 31st record sales plummeted after a major oil spill happened right down the street from his business.

The Pegasus Pipeline rupture was nearly two miles away from Brown's business but that oil ran for nearly a mile before crews were able to stop it. The site where it ended was next to the main road that leads to Mayflower RV. According to Brown, because of clean up efforts, that road was blocked off for about 60 days. During those 60 days he says sales hit rock bottom adding up a 75 percent drop or $268,000 loss in business. In the lawsuit, filed on Tuesday, Brown claims the oil giant was negligent in their operation and maintenance of the pipeline. But Brown says filing a lawsuit was his last resort.

"As I would give them documents, he would come back and ask for more documents and I started to see that they were putting on a nice face but they were not being sincere in the way they were dealing. So I that point in time I retained an attorney," said Brown.

Brown says his business took such a hard hit that he had to access a line of credit for everyday business functions.
