Pryor sides with GOP to oppose filibuster changes

Posted: Updated:

LITTLE ROCK (AP) - Arkansas U.S. Sen. Mark Pryor broke with fellow Democrats to vote against a measure to weaken filibusters and make it harder for Republicans to block confirmation of the president's nominees for judges and other top posts.

The measure passed 52-48 on Thursday after Democrats used a procedural move nicknamed the "nuclear option," which allowed the measure to pass with just a simple majority of 51 votes. Senate rules are more commonly changed with 67 votes.

In a statement, Pryor said that using the procedural move "could permanently damage the Senate and have negative ramifications for the American people."

Arkansas' other senator, Republican U.S. Rep. John Boozman, also opposed the plan.
