Ark. school to keep logo despite trademark spat

Posted: Updated:

GREEN FOREST (AP) - A small Arkansas school district says it'll continue using a tiger in its logo despite a letter alleging that the image violates a University of Missouri trademark.

The Green Forest School Board voted this week to keep using its tiger mascot logo. The school received a letter from Collegiate Licensing Company last month that said Green Forest's logo was "nearly identical" to the University of Missouri's trademarked tiger-head logo. An attorney for the district maintains that the school is not infringing on Missouri's trademark.

James Aronowitz, an attorney for Collegiate Licensing Company, says Missouri doesn't actively look for schools with tiger mascots - but the Green Forest logo was brought to the university's attention. Aronowitz says that trademark owners have to protect their trademarks or risk losing ownership of them.
