Baby's Death in Alexander Being Criminally Investigated

Posted: Updated:

(KATV) A baby's death in Alexander is being investigated by the Arkansas State Police. In August, the Department of Human Services was called to the home to investigate an environmental neglect issue, but records show the claim was unsubstantiated.

Last week, police were called to the home of seven month-old Yankee Combee, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are still investigating the cause of the child's death. Combee's funeral will be held Saturday.

DHS does not discuss specific cases, but said they do thorough checks of situations they've been called to and would not leave a child in a dangerous situation.

"There's been instances where say the DHS agent goes in and things are fine and then something does happen later and the conditions of the home are completely different. So there can be a lot of changes, I guess that would really be a case by case kind of issue," said Kate Luck, a public information coordinator for the DHS.

Combee's great grandmother Rosie Hobby told Channel 7 News that his mother loved him and took care of him and his older brother.

"He means all the world to us, he was a happy, healthy loving baby," Hobby said. "Everything a child needs, he's got. He was taken care of. Always was taken care of. I don't know why it happened. I can't answer that. Only the good lord can answer that. I can't answer it."
