Governor Mike Beebe honors veterans in ceremony at River Market

LITTLE ROCK -  Governor Mike Beebe honored veterans in a ceremony at Little Rock's River Market District, hosted by the Arkansas Department of Veterans Affairs Monday.

In his address Beebe said he recently hosted the French consul general, who was in town to honor six Arkansas veterans, two posthumously, for their service in World War II liberating France from the Nazi.

The veterans were awarded France's highest military honor, the French Legion of Honor, but the governor said in many cases, their own families didn't know what heroic acts they has performed in the war.  For that reason Beebe said, "It is incumbent on all of us to let the world know the sacrifices of the men and women who wear a uniform both in  peace time and in war".

Governor Beebe said all service members should be honored on Veterans Day, but he says he feels especially compelled to honor Viet Nam Era veterans, because they didn't get a heroes' welcome when  they returned to the United States.

U.S. Senator Mark Pryor was in attendance at the gathering.   The 106th Arkansas Army Band played the National Anthem.
