UAMS approved to offer physical therapy doctorate

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences has won approval to offer a doctoral degree in physical therapy.

The Higher Education Coordinating Board on Friday approved a plan to teach physical therapy students at its northwest Arkansas campus. The nod from the board enables UAMS to move ahead with the process in which it will create the doctoral program.

UAMS officials say the program should be in position to start accepting students in 2015. The school still has to win accreditation before it can admit students.

UAMS Provost Jeanne Heard says there's a significant demand for physical therapists in western and northwestern Arkansas, a shortage the program will help address.

The three-year program is to begin with 26 students, with an equal number added each year.
