FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) - The U.S. Marshals Museum that's planned for Fort Smith is to have a former attorney general for the installation of a cornerstone of the building.

Former U.S. attorney general Edwin Meese III is to attend the Nov. 9 event, and former Marshals Service associate director Howard Safir is also to speak.

Safir is a former New York City police and fire commissioner.

Organizers are in the process of raising $50 million for the facility, which is planned to open in fall 2016, with groundbreaking next September.

The Southwest Times Record reports (http://is.gd/7272r5 ) the cornerstone will be for the Hall of Honor. The ceremony will pay tribute to the more than 250 marshals and deputy marshals who lost their lives while carrying out their duties.
